Peter Roth (b: 1730)
was a Catholic Farmer from Neustatt (Haardt?) which was in the Kurpfalz area of Germany. He arrived in Volmer on July 18, 1766 with his wife and 3 children. The Original Settlers List for Volmer lists the following:
Roth, Peter, 36, Cath., farmer from Kurpfalz, Neustatt Haardt(?). Wife: Maria, 35 Children: Friedrich, 8; Johann, 1; Peter, 1. Arrived: 18.07.1766 Received from the Provincial Chancery in Saratov: 150 rubles. Beisitzer.
Peter Roth is listed as being a Beisitzer. The word Beisitzer translates to Assessor in english, which can mean a judge.
Neither Peter or his wife, Maria are listed in the 1798 Volmer Census. There is a Maria Magdalena Roth, 27 who is married to Ieronimous Brost, 31. I would assume that she is the daughter of Peter and Maria, but because Friedrich is listed as being 44 years old in 1798 it is possible that Maria Magdalena is his daughter. We will need marriage records to know for sure. There is no mention of Johann, who was 1 years old in the original settlers list, leaving the village therefore he must have died. I found a note that a Peter Roth, with his wife Anna Maria and daughter Benedikta Zorn moved to Yelshanka (Husaren) in 1796. I don’t know if this is the same Peter who was listed in the original settlers list or if he too is a son of Friedrich’s. We would need to see if this Peter shows up in a census for Husaren to know for sure.
According to the 1798 Volmer Census Friedrich Roth is 44 and is married to Elisabetha Schroh who was 27 at the time. There is mention of which children are Friedrich’s from his deceased wife, but no mention of what her name was. Friedrich’s daughter from his deceased wife name was Maria Magdalena(10). I would conclude that it is likely that she was named after her mother. The son by the same wife was named Burghardt(17). Friedrich’s children from Elisabetha Schroh were: Joseph(6), Hieronimus(4), and Peter(2).
As we see from the 1834 Volmer Census this family was well established in Volmer and had increased to 6 Roth's being head of their own household. Unfortunately, the 1834 Census did not include maiden names so it is hard to know for sure where all the Roth daughters went. We would need a marriage register to know for sure. To see all of the Roths listed in the 1834 Volmer Census here: 1834 Roths.
There is also 6 Roth Head of Households in the 1850 Volmer Census. We are very lucky to have had the maiden names included in this document. If you want to view all the Roths that were recorded in the 1850 Volmer Census click here: 1850 Roths.
Many families connected to the above have contacted me. We have made many connections and filled many holes in a lot of family trees. I apprieciate everyone who has taken the time to send me their own genealogies to be put into the Volmer Database. If it was not for that effort many connections would not have been possible. Keep up the good work researchers! |
