Gartner Families of Volmer

Member of the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia.

This site is owned by Angela Gartner.

Surname Variations:

Gartner, Gärtner, Gertner, Gertnar, Gortner, Gerstner, Kertner, Geutner

German Pronunciation:

Name in Russian: Гαρтиер

Peter Gertner [Gärtner] was listed in the 1766 Original Settlers List for Volmer as being a 46 year old Catholic farmer from Kurpfalz, Worms. Worms (pronounced Vorms) is a city located in Southwest Germany.  Today the city is in the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate, about 28 miles south of Mainz, and has 85,829 inhabitants.

Also listed with Peter Gertner [Gärtner] was his wife Maria Elisabetha, 27 and their 1 year old daughter Maria Eva.  They received from the Provincial Chancery in Saratov 150 rubles to start their new life.  A family tree that Dr. Igor Pleve researched for Florence Rizzolo lists Maria Elisabetha’s maiden name as Stang.

According to the 1798 Volmer Census Peter and Maria Elisabetha  had 3 sons and 2 daughters before Peter died, all of which produced offspring.

1. Joseph died young and there is no mention of his wife’s name.  His son is found living with his uncle Heinrich in the 1798 Volmer Census.

2. Johann Adam, wife, and 6 children remained in Volmer thru to the 1850 Volmer Census.

3. Heinrich, wife and children also remained in Volmer, though some of their children later moved to other villages.

4. Maria Eva married and remained in Volmer.

5. Elisabetha married and remained in Volmer.

The Gartner descendents moved and married into many of the villages over the years.  It is well worth your time investigating the villages of Dehler and Schuck to name a couple.

Gartner & Stang to be wed

Before 1766!

We know from the 1766 Original Settlers List for Volmer that the Gartner's came from Worms and the Stang came from Gernsheim.  It is possible that Peter and Maria Elisabetha were the first Gartners and Stangs to marry.  Worms and Gernsheim are located only 20.1 km or 12.5 miles apart.  Today it would take about 20 minutes to travel between towns.

Loose Ends

1. Try to confirm through another document that Maria Elisabetha (b: 1745) is the daughter of Sebastian Stang (who also moved to Volmer).

2. Find birth, death, and marriage dates for Joseph (son is  Nicolaus b: 1787).

3. Determine if Nicolaus (b: 1787) moved or died before the 1834 Volmer Census.

4. Did Elisabetha (b: 1779) die or marry into another village before 1834?

5. Who is Johan Adam’s Parents? If we figure this out we can finally link our family trees to the 1850 Volmer Census.

Who were Johan Adam’s Parents?

If we figure this out we can finally link our family trees to the 1850 Volmer Census.

If someone has any mention of this in their family tree, documents, or bibles please let me know!

Thanx

Text Box: This tree was hand drawn by my husband’s grandfather (Joseph Gartner a.k.a Co-op Joe). We are having trouble matching our direct line, John Peter Gartner and Pauline Prediger, to the 1850 Volmer Census. Does anyone have any ideas? Also troubling us is who were the Brost men that married Elizabeth and Catherine?

This drawing is obviously not exactly right. Grandpa said it was a drawing of the families that came to Canada only.
