Brost Families of the Volga Village Volmer (Vollmer)

Member of the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia.

This site is owned by Angela Gartner.

The Brost family arrived in Volmer (Vollmer) on July 18, 1766.  The Original Settlers List for Volmer lists Michael Brost, his wife and young son as coming from Kurmainz, Burg.  Michael is not listed in the 1798 Volmer Census, however, there is a Brost Head of Household listed.  It is easy to assume that this is Michaels’s son, and the fact that this son is not included in the Originals Settlers List is because he was born right after.

Anyway, with that all being said, lets start with the family that is listed in the 1798 Volmer Census Record.  Hieronimus  Brost and his wife have 1 son and 3 daughters as well as an adopted son.

Hieronimus Brost is also found in the 1834 Volmer Census.  The number of sons that live with him at the time of the 1834 Census is 3.  Two of them are married and have children, the third son is still single.  There is no mention of who Hieronimus’s daughters may have married and since the 1834 Volmer Census did not include maiden names we don’t even know if they stayed in Volmer of if they went to other Colonies.

In the 1850 Volmer Census Hieronimus’s death is recorded and all three of his sons are married with good sized families.  Most of the maiden names were recorded in the document and there are many Brost brides that remained in the Volmer Village.

Loose Ends…

· Find out what happened to the Brost son that is in the Original Settlers List for Volmer. Did he die or move? There is no mention in the 1798 Volmer Census of him moving, therefore; I am assuming he died.

· I am looking to add pictures of the Brosts who immigrated from Volmer. If you have any pictures please email me.  Angela

Brost Families that Stayed in Russia

The German meaning of Brost:

A name for an official from Middle High German—brobest

“supervisor” (praepositus in Latin)

Wilhelm Brost & Margaret (?)

Were the great-great grandparents of our fellow researcher Greg Schell.   There daughter, Marianna, who wasn't born yet when they took the 1850 census, married Franz Degenhart from Seewald.  Their oldest daughter, Anna Elizabeth, was Greg’s grandmother.

Some Canadian Brost relatives came to visit Greg’s grandparents sometime in the 1950's, and Greg would love to connect with the Brost Canadian branch once again and work together on expanding the family tree.

Thank you and good luck to the Brost Families!  Angela
