The Holman family is one of our Village Volmer original settlers. Michael Hohlmann was a Catholic farmer from Heilbronn. He, his wife and son arrived in Volmer on July 18, 1766. Michael’s wife is not listed as a second wife, but she could not be the mother of Michael’s son as she is to young.
According to the information found in the 1798 Volmer Census Michael’s family grew to 2 sons and 3 daughters. Both sons and their families remain in Volmer, where as only 1 of the daughters married and stayed in Volmer. The other 2 daughters married into different villages. One went to Preuss (Krasnopolye) and the other went to Keller (Krasnorynovka). Both of the Holman sons married Stang daughters, and the Holman daughters married into the Doetzel, Schneider and Goff(Hoff) families.
In the 1834 Volmer Census the 2 sons and their families are still in Volmer with the exception of one of their sons who went to Schuck (Gryaznovatka). Since there are no maiden names recorded I am not able to give you which families these children married into. However, there is mention of a son-in-law living with one of the families and his last name is Hergenreder.
The 1850 Volmer Census is more detailed than the 1834 because most of the maiden names are included. There are 4 Holman Head of Households listed. These families are all quite large. The surnames of the men’s wives are: Baumgartner, Mosman, Diestel, Saks, Deits, Dornes, Ulrich, Graf, Zaur, and Erdle. The are 4 of Holman wives found in Volmer and they married into the following families: Jungheim, Krieger, Engraf, and Beilman.
I have been able to trace the Holman families that immigrated to Saskatchewan, Canada to these Holman families in Volmer.
I hope this information is helpful in determining what your next step in your research is. Let me know if you want to purchase the 1834 and/or the 1850 Volmer Census Records by emailing me.

Loose Ends…
· In the 1798 Volmer Census there is a Katherina Almen (Hollmann?) listed as a wife of a Schechtel. The Schechtel husband is listed as being from Schuck (Gryaznovatka). Her birth date doesn’t match those of the other Holman women that are related to the original settler Michael Holman. I think her name has been miss-translated. · I know there are many Holman’s that went to Argentina. I would love to investigate these branches further. Contact me if you have any tips. |
