The Peter Gertner [Gärtner] that is listed in the 1766 Original Settlers List for Volmer was from Kurpfalz, Worms, Germany. Worms is a city located in Southwest Germany. Today the city is in the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate, about 28 miles south of Mainz, and has 85,829 inhabitants. It is not entirely clear if he lived in Worms or one of the many boroughs that surround the area. Until we find which church he was a member of we won’t know exactly where he lived. The following is a link to a list of Catholic Churches that were apart of the Bishopric of Worms (before 1817). My husband’s grandfather believed that our Gartner line was from Austria before Germany. I am currently trying to locate our family’s church in Germany and hope to find out where they came from before that.
GARTNER FAMILY IN RUSSIA
Listed with Peter Gertner [Gärtner] was his wife Maria Elisabetha, 27 and their 1 year old daughter Maria Eva. They received from the Provincial Chancery in Saratov 150 rubles to start their new life. Thanks to a family tree that Dr. Igor Pleve researched for Florence Rizzolo we know that Maria Elisabetha’s maiden name was Stang. The Stang family that also settled in Volmer were listed as being from a village called Griesheim, Germany. If you look at the 2nd map to the right you will see how close these towns were., a mere 50 km apart.
Please check out the Volga Gartner Family Project Page to see what information we have. If you have anything to add, please contact me.

I am interested in finding out which Brost men married two Gartner sisters. They were sisters of Johan Adam Gartner who was born after 1858 and he married a Katharina Schmidt. Johan Adam’s sisters names were Katherine and Elisabeth. Both sisters were said to have married Brosts.
These Brost families may hold important Gartner information. I need to know who Johan Adam, Katherine & Elisabeth’s parents names. If I can figure that out I can finally link our family to a Gartner family Tree from the 1850 Volmer Census. |
