Sieben Families of the Volga Village Volmer (Vollmer)

Member of the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia.

I have found a 17 year old Sieben orphan named Peter living in the Michael Brost household in 1766.  Unfortunately the 1766 Volmer Original Settlers List doesn’t mention where Peter Sieben came from before coming to Volmer.  There is a note that states Michael Brost is the husband of Peter’s sister, Maria Magdalena.  One would like to assume that Peter would be from the same area as Michael Brost, however with out proof there is no knowing for certain.  Michael Brost is listed as being from Kurmainz, Burg.

Another Sieben family was found in the Schuck (Gryaznovatka) 1766 Oringinal Settlers List.  Hieronymous Sieben is listed as being a 26 year old Catholic farmer from Mainz.  It is unknown if the brother and sister Volmer Siebens, Peter and Maria Magdalena are related to Hieronymous.  Hieronymous came to Volmer with his wife, Maria Eva (21), and a son named Michael (3).

In the 1798 Volmer Census Peter is not mentioned at all.  He may have died or moved.  It is odd that there is no mention as usually a death of a male was recorded in the register as well as any movement between villages.  I checked the 1798 Schuck Census to see if maybe he joined the other Sieben clan (because maybe his is related to them), and I did find a Peter Sieben house hold.  Now I am trying to establish if this Schuck Peter is the same Peter that is mentioned in the 1766 Volmer Original Settlers List.

Facts:

1766 Volmer Oringal Settlers List: Peter Sieben age 17 (this calculates out to 1749)

1798 Schuck Census:  Peter Sieben age 45 (this calculates out to 1753)  a difference of only 4 years.

1798 Schuck Census: Peter’s wife, Barbara Palman [Beilmann] (43 calculates to be 1755) is listed as being from Kopenka colony [Volmer].

1798 Schuck Census: Peter is not listed as having moved from else were.

One could assume that if these Peters were the same person:

Peter may have only been temporarily living with his sister and her husband in Volmer, and because he was 17 years old at the time he was close to adult hood and maybe once he married he chose to move to the village where his other siblings resided.  This is not an unreasonable guess however we can’t be totally sure.

In the 1798 Schuck Census there are 5 Sieben male households, 1 Sieben widow household, 2 Sieben daughters married into other villages, and 1 Sieben single male moved to another village.  I made a chart of the information that I found within this document, which is below.  I left out some birth dates since this is not my information to give away or to sell.  This information as well as other Schuck documents are available for purchase through the AHSGR or can be viewed for free at one of our AHSGR meetings in Edmonton.  I would be more than happy to discuss your research either at one of our meeting or via email.  For more information about the AHSGR in Edmonton please email me and I can fill you in.

Below are lists of the Sieben villagers that left Russia

Families that Stayed in Russia

I do not know of anyone who has the 1834 Schuck Census, so this is a document that still needs to be ordered from Russia.  Last year I was asked to translate the 1850 Schuck Census by Lola Stadelman.  I don’t know if she has prepared the document for sale and I can’t find her email address at this time.  I will try to contact her very soon.

I hope this information will help with your research.   Below are some of the census documents that are currently available to order.  Also check the Resource Inventory page for other books or periodicals that I have been able to find.  If anyone has information to add to this please let me know.

Thanks,

Does anyone know who the following are?

Johannes Sieben, 35

Katherine, 33

I found them listed in the Elis Island Database.  They departed Buenos Aires aboard the SS Verdi, and arrived in New York on March 30, 1913.  The comment was that they were joining father in Saskatchewan.  Also traveling with them was Peter Kolman, 23, wife Elena (Helena) 19, dau Katherina 4months old.  Their comment read: joining friend Henry Sieben in Canada.  Therefore I conclude that Johannes Sieben’s father must be Henry, but which one?

*in the 1766 Schuck Original Settlers List Hieronymous’s wife’s name was listed as Maria Eva (21 calculates to be 1745). It is very likely that this is the same wife.  If it is the same wife it is nice to see that we found her maiden name.

Maria Elisabetha Siben [Sieben], widow 48 (1755)

Deceased husband: Baltasar Ingelgofer [Ingelhofer], I found him in the Rothemmel Original Settlers List.  He was 17 years old in 1766 (b: 1750).  Resided in the household of his stepmother Anna Maria Weigand and moved to the colony of Seewald in 1768.

* I can’t find out where Maria Elisabetha Sieben came from or who she was married to at the time of her arrival to Russia.  I will assume she arrived in the year 1766 along with the majority of these Germans.  If you calculate how old she would
