Translating Russian Documents can sometimes be challenging. There are many reasons why mistakes can be made. We as Village Coordinators and translators are always eager to hear your ideas for how we might minimize mistakes.
I would like to applaud the researcher who suggested including a separate column in our final census booklets for the surname as it was written in the Russian Census Document. This is a great idea and now that most of us have access to a scan it is very possible. I decided to include a scanned version of the names on this website so that everyone can proof my work. This also allows everyone to see exactly how it was recorded by the Census Recorder. Keep in mind that the Census Recorders were generally not fluent in German and depended on each individual to spell their names for them. However, a great many of the Volga Germans were illiterate and this left the Russian Census Recorder to give it his best guess! |
