The Doetzel Family was not part of the Original Settlers of Volmer. Instead they settled in Seewald (Verkhovye) on August 20, 1767. A widow Anna Maria Dietzel is listed along with a son and a daughter in the Seewald Original Settlers List. It is also noted that they came from Mainz, Kamberg before coming to Seewald, and according to the Seewald OSL they moved to the colony of Kamenka in 1768. No doubt Anna Maria’s motivation to move was marriage.
In the 1798 Volmer Census I found a Tizel (Doetzel), who possibly could be Anna Maria Dietzel’s daughter, married to an Ostertag and they came from the colony Seewald (Verchovye). The birthdates for this Mrs. Ostertag don’t exactly line up with Anna Maria’s daughter, but they are close. Also found in the 1798 Volmer Census is a listing for a male Dizel (Doetzel). His birthdates do line up with the Seewald OSL for Anna Maria’s son. Therefore; it is easy to assume that the Mrs. Ostertag is likely this mans sister. Unfortunately the 1798 Volmer Census doesn’t indicate where this Male Dizel (Doetzel) came from. Since he is not listed in the Volmer OSL he must have come from somewhere else, and is likely the son of the widow Anna Maria Dietzel.
So we will start with what we know for sure. We have a Peter Dizel (Doetzel) in the 1798 Volmer Census. He has a wife, 7 sons and 4 daughters. I have traced all 7 of his sons in the 1834 Volmer Census along with their wives and children. Since the 1834 Volmer Census doesn't have maiden names included it is hard to tell which, if any, remained in Volmer after marrying. The 1834 Volmer Census also indicates that one of the Doetzel sons moved to Yagodnaya Polyana sometime before 1834.
All these families are present in the 1850 Volmer Census with the indication that on young man moved to another colony.
I know from family stories and from information found in many family history books that the Doetzel families who came to Canada and settled in Saskatchewan are descendants of the Peter Dizel (Doetzel) and his children from the 1798, 1834, & 1850 Volmer Census records.
